In the early '80s, I was a huge Garfield fan. I couldn't get enough of that cat. I think he was much better drawn back then than he is today, but that's just me.
Oh, man, the '80s were great for comics! My daily newspaper comics experience started with three "must reads": Bloom County (then at the height of its perfection), the Far Side, and Garfield. Sometimes, a joke from the comics would get stuck in my head and I'd be struggling through a class trying to stifle a laugh. **Sigh** Memories.
My son used to be obsessed with Garfield when he was little. I think I bought him every Garfield book every published!
